While I think our society goes a bit overboard with trying to protect ourselves from harm, I thought this information might be worth consideration.  I have granite tile in my kitchen and have no intention of tearing it out, but if I were installing new countertops I think I would closely consider all the other options.
One of my personal favorites is the poured concrete countertops - they can be made to look so beautiful.
I have engineered stone in one of my bathrooms and it's ok, but it seems to get scratches easily.
